Sometimes a week just chokes the living daylights out of you and by Friday you are gagging for air.  With Christmas holidays still weeks away it was the prefect time for a  Friday night wine down.  So off I went to Glenburn Spa in the Muldersdrift countryside for some TLC.  In a typical Jacaranda 94.2 “take your job and shove it” moment, I left work a bit earlier on a Friday afternoon.  Just reaching the outskirts of the countryside already started calming my frayed nerves. As I took a left into Kromdraai Road from Beyers Naude at the billboard, the sloping hills and valleys started re-adjusting the tense muscles in my neck. Relief was within reach.

Glenburn Spa is on the Glenburn Lodge property, as one goes through the entrance on the right. It may be a family orientated three star lodge, but in my opinion the Spa can easily be rated as four star. Persian carpets and dark wood finishes create a luxurious look and interestingly enough, all the treatment rooms have wine names. Being a huge wine fan I immediately felt at home. I learned from Spa manager Geraldine that the wine theme extends to their product use as they use Theravine – a proudly SA product which derives its ingredients from grapes in Stellenbosch. I was smitten right away, not only can I drink the goodness of the winelands, I can also integrate it through my skin.  #loveatfirstsight

I needed top-to-toe TLC and settled in for a full body massage. The Red Wine Sachet Massage & Merlot Hydrotherapy Spa Bath entails a lovely 60 minute Full Body massage and 20 minutes of Hydrobath. For those who are sticklers for details, it is important to note that the massage and bath both include a warm infusion of herbs, minerals and red wine which is used to create cell renewal through your skin. Every sachet contains polyphenols, which slows the damaging cell oxidation process. The Merlot hydrotherapy spa bath adds to this anti-aging treatment. Not caring too much about the detail while being spoiled rotten, I can just add that this was super relaxing. To me wine is bottled poetry in any which way it presents itself. The feeling of ultimate relaxation certainly had something to do with the masterful strokes of my therapist’s capable hands. A glass of vino wraps up the experience if you are so inclined, although I felt quite pure after my massage and settle for a cup of Rooibos while nibbling on a home-baked cookie.

A stroll around the Spa revealed an indoor pool, a sexy Jacuzzi room with its own little garden which could do with some touches of summer colour, (I am making a mental note to bring hubby for a treat for the romantic couples retreat package)  and a lovely patio overlooking a lush garden, tennis courts and the distant hills of Muldersdrift. When I have my glasses on I can even see cows grazing in the distance.

I was reluctant to disrobe and get into my real life clothes. A stop at the reception counter added a last bit of joy as a tried the Matsimela body butters in all their glorious fragrances.  With the smell of body butter and aromatherapy oils on my pampered skin, the week that was, was a faint memory and I was ready for the weekend to come.

  • It’s a wine themed spa. Whoop-whoop.
  • It’s a very short drive from the maddening taxis. All of a sudden and you are smelling the daisies in the countryside.
  • The Jacuzzi can be set up for romantic moments.
  • If the massage makes you super lazy you can check into the lodge. The Garden Suites are stunning.
  • Take some time to explore – the property has two rivers and a mountain. Quite spectacular.
